Chimney crown repair in Tulsa

We seal or rebuild the slab on top of your chimney so water runs off it and not into the brick.

Chimney and fireplace repair

Small cracks, big leaks

The crown is the slab of concrete or mortar on top of a masonry chimney. Its job is to shed water away from the brick. When it cracks, water gets into the masonry, and every freeze makes the crack bigger. A crown repair stops that cycle early.

Before it reaches the brick and mortar.

Freeze and thaw

Oklahoma winters widen every crack.

What the chimney crown does

The crown is the roof of your chimney.

Rain and snow land on top of the chimney every time it storms. A sound crown slopes that water away from the flue and off the edges of the brick. A cracked crown lets the water soak in. From there it works down into the masonry, rusts the damper and can show up as stains inside the house.

Water inside masonry is a bigger problem in Oklahoma than in mild climates. Water expands when it freezes, so each cold night pushes a crack a little wider. A hairline crack in fall can be a loose chunk by spring.

Signs of a damaged crown

You may spot crown damage from the yard, or you may only see what it causes:

Repair or rebuild?

Small cracks can often be repaired and sealed. A crown that is broken through, crumbling or pulling away from the flue usually needs to be rebuilt. We look at it up close, show you what we found and tell you which option makes sense. You decide.

If the bricks below the crown are already damaged, we include them in the plan. See masonry repair. A good cap on top of a sound crown is the best protection against water.

The crown is the solid slab on top of the masonry. The cap is the metal cover over the flue opening. The crown sheds water off the chimney, and the cap keeps water, animals and debris out of the flue.

Yes. Water that gets past the crown can travel down the chimney and show up as stains near the fireplace or on the ceiling. It is one of the most common causes of a leaking chimney.

Both. Small cracks are repaired and sealed. A crown that is broken through or crumbling is rebuilt. We explain which one your chimney needs and why.
