Chimney and fireplace repair

Where the fire meets the house

The firebox is the part of the fireplace where the fire burns. In a masonry fireplace it is lined with firebrick set in heat-resistant mortar. In a factory-built fireplace it is lined with refractory panels. Every fire puts heat on those surfaces, and over the years they crack, wear and come loose. A sound firebox keeps that heat away from the walls and framing around it.

What wears out a firebox

Heat, water and time do most of the damage.

Firebrick and mortar expand and shrink with every fire. Over many seasons the mortar joints burn out and the bricks crack. Water that gets down the chimney soaks the firebox and speeds up the damage. Large, hot fires and logs dropped against the back wall add wear too.

Gaps in a firebox are more than a cosmetic problem. They can let heat reach parts of the house it should not, which is why we look at the firebox on every visit.

How we repair a firebox

We clean the firebox so we can see it, then explain what we found. Worn joints are repointed with heat-resistant mortar, and cracked or loose firebrick is replaced. In a factory-built fireplace, cracked refractory panels can often be replaced with panels made for that unit. When the damage is too widespread to patch, we explain what a firebox rebuild would involve.

You hear the options and the cost before any work starts, and you decide. If water is part of the cause, we check the cap and the crown too.

Hairline cracks are common and not always urgent. Wide cracks, loose bricks and missing mortar are. We tell you which ones need attention now and which can wait.

If bricks are loose, mortar is missing or panels are broken, stop using it until it is checked. Gaps can let heat reach the walls and framing around the fireplace.

Often, yes. Cracked refractory panels can usually be replaced with panels made for that fireplace. We check the unit and tell you what fits.
