Smoke chamber repair in Tulsa

Cracks sealed and rough brick parged smooth, so smoke moves up the flue cleanly.

Chimney and fireplace repair

A smoother path for the smoke

The smoke chamber is the sloped space above the damper where the fireplace narrows into the flue. In many masonry chimneys it was left rough, with stepped brick. Parging coats it smooth. A smoother chamber helps smoke move up cleanly and leaves fewer ledges for soot and creosote.

Smooth surface

Fewer ledges for soot to collect on.

Cleaner draft

Smoke moves up with less turbulence.

Found by inspection

You cannot see it from the room.

You approve first

We explain why before we start.

What the smoke chamber is

It sits just above the damper, out of sight.

When smoke leaves the firebox, it passes the damper and enters the smoke chamber, which funnels it into the flue. In many older chimneys, the chamber was built from stepped brick that was never smoothed. Those steps catch soot and creosote and stir up the smoke on its way out.

Cracks and gaps in the smoke chamber also let heat and smoke reach places they should not. Because it sits above the damper, the only way to see its condition is to look up into it with a light during an inspection or cleaning. We do that on every visit.

When parging makes sense

We usually recommend parging after an inspection shows one of these:

How we repair a smoke chamber

First we clean the smoke chamber so we can see it. Then we explain what we found. Cracks and gaps get sealed, and rough, stepped brick gets parged, which means coated with a smooth layer of heat-resistant mortar. If you approve, we do the work, clean up and walk you through the finished chamber.

Parging often goes together with a chimney cleaning or relining. We tell you up front if your chimney needs more than one.

Smoke chamber repair FAQ

Another question? Call us and talk to a real person.

It is the sloped area above the damper where the fireplace narrows into the flue. Soot often collects there.

Rough, stepped brick catches soot and creosote and stirs up the smoke. A smooth surface lets smoke move up more cleanly and gives buildup fewer places to settle.

Not always. We recommend it when an inspection shows a rough or damaged smoke chamber, or when smoke and soot problems point to it.
