Chimney cap installation in Tulsa

A cap that fits keeps rain, animals and leaves out of your flue and keeps sparks in.

Chimney and fireplace repair

The simplest way to protect a chimney

A chimney cap sits on top of the flue. It is a small part, but it does a big job. It sheds rain, keeps birds and squirrels from nesting above the damper, stops leaves from piling up, and its screen keeps embers from landing on the roof.

Keeps rain out

Water in the flue damages the liner and the damper.

Keeps animals out

No nests above the damper.

Keeps sparks in

The screen catches embers before they reach the roof.

Why a chimney cap matters

An open flue is a straight path for water and animals into your home.

Without a cap, rain falls straight down the flue. Over time it rusts the damper, wears out the liner and soaks into the smoke chamber. Animals look for dry, sheltered places, and an open flue is exactly that. Leaves and twigs collect too, and a pile of debris above the damper is fuel sitting next to a fire.

A cap also has a screen around the sides. The screen catches embers before they land on your roof or in the yard, which matters in dry, windy weather.

Signs you need a new cap

Some signs are easy to see from the yard. Others show up inside the house.

How we fit a chimney cap

A cap has to fit the flue and the top of the chimney. We measure, check the crown it sits on, and recommend a cap that fits. If the crown is cracked, we tell you, because a new cap on a broken crown still lets water in. See crown repair for that work.

Before we install anything, we explain the options and the cost, and you decide. A cap is often added during a chimney sweep visit, since we are already on the roof.

Chimney cap installation questions

Chimney cap installation FAQ

Another question? Call us and talk to a real person.

Yes. A chimney without a cap takes in rain, leaves and animals. Adding one is one of the simplest ways to protect the flue, the damper and the liner.

A cap with a screen keeps birds, squirrels and other animals from getting into the flue. If something is already nesting inside, we clear it out first.

A cap that fits should not hurt your draft. A screen clogged with soot can, so we check the cap screen when we clean the chimney.
